Collaboration Clears the Way on Euclid Avenue

A local partnership has come together to solve a winter challenge that’s been troubling Benton Heights residents for years — keeping Euclid Avenue open and safe during heavy snow.

The solution began with a conversation at the Community Development Council, the neighborhood advisory group facilitated by New Heights CCDA to identify and address neighborhood concerns.

During one meeting, members recalled a severe snowstorm that left Euclid Avenue closed for days. Snow drifting from the Southwest Michigan Regional Airport had piled up so high that cars were being pulled out with excavators. With the only alternate route requiring a 20-minute detour, residents grew concerned about reaching their homes, church, and neighborhood services.

“We realized this wasn’t just inconvenient — it was a safety issue,” said Chris Britton, Executive Director of New Heights CCDA. “Our council members spoke up, and we started reaching out to the airport and the county to find a long-term solution.”

That outreach led to collaboration between New Heights CCDA, the Berrien County Road Department, and the Southwest Michigan Regional Airport. After several discussions, the group identified a simple but effective fix: a temporary snow berm along the airport’s western edge on Euclid Avenue. The berm will help stop drifting snow from blowing onto the road, and the Road Department will handle its construction and maintenance each winter season.

The Berrien County Board of Commissioners formally approved the agreement, marking a successful example of how community voices can lead to practical, lasting change.

“It’s a small but meaningful example of what happens when local voices are heard and collaboration takes root,” Britton said. “Every improvement like this helps make Benton Heights a safer, stronger, and more connected community".”
